Salacia reticulata is a flowering plant of the genus Salacia native to Sri Lanka and the Andaman Islands. It grows in dry zone forests in Sri Lanka. In ayurvedic medicine, it is known as kothala himbutu in Sinhala.

Kothala Himbutu (Salacia reticulata) is a herb that is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes and obesity. The plant’s medicinal qualities are well known in villages in Sri Lanka, where jugs are made with the bark of the kothala himbutu creeper, in which water is stored overnight and consumed for its health benefits. The extracts of Salacia reticulata (Salacia extract), a plant that has been used for the treatment of early diabetes, rheumatism and gonorrhea in Ayurveda, have been shown to have an anti-obesity effect and suppress hyperglycemia.
