Water World is the first underwater aquarium in South Asia and the only public aquarium in Sri Lanka. Named Water World, it is actually a collection of two parks. It consists of an aquarium and a bird park. This is a great place for anyone looking for a place to have fun with family around Colombo. Located on the banks of the Kelani River, Water World is a reasonably priced attraction. The two parks can be viewed separately or as part of a combined package, which costs Rs. 280 for adults and Rs. 140 for children.

Water World

Water World is an aquatic wonderland and is home to over 500 species of fish and invertebrates. The range of aquatic life here also includes freshwater, marine, and aquatic animals and plants from ecosystems around the world. At Water World, you will witness rare and fascinating species such as Arapaima (The largest freshwater fish in the world), Lungfish (A fish that has real “lungs” like that of a human), Electric eel (The world’s most dangerous electricity-generating fish) and Freshwater stingrays from the Amazon River. Water World is truly unique because it is the only local facility that offers an exciting experience of glorious shark observation. Water World’s attractions include 150 show tanks and more than a million liters of water, such as ponds. The latest attraction at Water World is the Underwater Aquarium. Launched in 2013, it is the first of its kind in South Asia.

Bird Park

This is Sri Lanka’s first bird sanctuary, as well as an amazing collection of birds from around the world, such as the Amazon rainforest in South America, tropical Asia, Australia, and Africa. It has the largest collection of exotic parrots in the country for public display of its colorful bird range. The Bird Park is also the only public facility in Sri Lanka where you can experience the magic of the rainforest “Lories”. The rare and exotic species of birds showcased at Bird Park includes 7 species of macaws, 13 species of lories, 15 species of a conure, and 8 species of cockatoo.

Environment

The land is adorned with ponds and artificial waterfalls. There are also plenty of places to sit and relax, including the park and playground. The ‘restaurant’ basically offers bottled drinks and snacks but is not the best choice for a proper lunch, so bring your own before you arrive. This is a great place to spend your time before rushing to Colombo and enjoy the tranquility of the environment.
